Trilogy of the Ships of Exile

Performance & Colloquium moderated by EUROM

The European Observatory on Memories (EUROM) joins Casa Amèrica Catalunya as a collaborating partner in the presentation of “Trilogy of the Ships of Exile”, a staged adaptation that brings together three works—Los niños de Morelia, Winnipeg, el vaixell de Neruda, and Massilia—to offer a panoramic view of the Spanish Republican exile through its emblematic ships and the countries of reception. The performance take place on May 20, 2026, at Casa Amèrica Catalunya, and will be followed by a public conversation moderated by EUROM coordinator Oriol López Badell.

EUROM’s participation builds on a long-term collaboration with the trilogy’s producers, La Jarra Azul and Puça Espectacles, whose work explores the Republican exile and its transatlantic routes—particularly through Winnipeg and Massilia, both developed in collaboration with EUROM.

This special event is part of the programme “Memory Beyond State Policies” (Memoria más allá de las políticas de Estado), organised by Casa Amèrica Catalunya, Memorial Democràtic and the commemorative programme España en LIbertad. 50 años, taking place from 18 to 20 May 2026.

About the performace

Following an intensive period of research and production, Puça Espectacles and La Jarra Azul have completed the trilogy of ships of Republican exile, presenting a stage adaptation that brings the three works together. It begins with Los niños de Morelia, tracing exile to Mexico; continues with Winnipeg, el vaixell de Neruda, centred on the voyage to Chile; and concludes with Massilia, which arrived in Buenos Aires. Los niños de Morelia premiered in 2005 and has been performed in more than 100 shows across Catalonia and Mexico. Winnipeg, el vaixell de Neruda (2020) and Massilia (2025) were co-productions with the Grec Festival and Teatre Akadèmia, developed in collaboration with EUROM.
The dramaturgy has been conceived to provide a wide-ranging perspective on exile by Víctor Hugo Rascón Banda (Los niños de Morelia), Laura Martel (Winnipeg, the ship of Neruda), and Albert Boronat and Maria Donoso (Massilia). It will be staged in the Casa Amèrica Catalunya auditorium by a large ensemble of Catalan and Latin American actors: Laia Alberch, Cristina Cazorla, Ada Cusidó, Pau Ferran, Oscar García, Laura Maria González, Georgina Latre, Bea Liebe, Joan Pasqual, Martí Salvat, and Edu Tudela, as part of the España en Libertad. 50 años touring programme.
