Playlist | Second Seminar on Women’s Prisons during Francoism (Barcelona)

The seminar dedicated to the Women’s Prisons of Barcelona took place at La Model Espai Memorial, the Faculty of Geography and History of the University of Barcelona, the Assembly Hall of the Workers’ Commissions, and the Monument to the Women’s Prison of Les Corts on November 20-23, 2025.

Coordinated by historian Fernando Hernández Holgado (Complutense University of Madrid), the round tables and parallel activities explored the history and memory of women’s prisons in Barcelona between 1936 and 1975. The discussions highlighted institutions such as the Old Women’s Prison of Reina Amàlia, the Provincial Prison of Les Corts, La Model, and the Provincial Prison of Trinitat.

Additionally, the conference examined the Franco regime’s mechanisms of repression and female moralization, including the Patronato de Protección de la Mujer and the Obra de Redención de Mujeres Caídas, which imposed social control through a network of special prisons.
