Playlist | Memories of Capitalism

The recordings of the seminar Memories of Capitalism are available in a dedicated video playlist.

Organised by the Laboratory of Studies on the Political Uses of the Past (LUPPA-UFRGS) and the European Observatory on Memories (EUROM), the online meeting brought together researchers from Europe and Latin America on 13–14 December 2023 to reflect on the conditions for producing memories of capitalism and naming its victims.

The discussions explored how the political, economic, social and cultural transformations of the twentieth century have reshaped relationships with the past and with time itself. While public debates and memorial practices often acknowledge the victims of communist regimes, the seminar addressed the relative absence of recognition for the memories and victims of capitalism, including those linked to slavery, colonialism, imperialism, neoliberalism and environmental destruction.

The four sessions examined the temporality of capitalism and memory, modern and contemporary slavery, colonialism and imperialism, and the victims of neoliberalism and the capitalocene.

Watch the full playlist and revisit the conversations that challenge us to rethink memory, responsibility and historical recognition in the contemporary world.
