Playlists | The LGBTI+ struggles in Europe. Subaltern Memories 2022

As Pride is celebrated across Europe this June, EUROM brings back the video recordings of the first edition of the Subaltern Memories Conference, an annual initiativedesigned to spotlight what we define as “subaltern memories”—those of social groups historically silenced or pushed to the margins. Held in 2022, the inaugural edition focused on LGBTI+ communities, whose histories have often been erased or repressed by dominant political and cultural narratives.

Taking place over one day, the event brought together historians, activists, and community voices to reflect on the longstanding repression of sexual diversity and the collective memory of resistance that continues to shape today’s fight for LGBTI+ rights. Despite progress in many parts of Europe, the conference underscored how conservative policies and attitudes still endanger LGBTI+ lives in numerous countries.

More than a commemoration, the conference served as a space for learning and solidarity. Through a mix of personal testimony, historical analysis, and transnational dialogue, participants explored the roots of today’s inequalities and imagined paths toward a more inclusive Europe.

Four years on, and during a time of both celebration and renewed vigilance, we invites the public to revisit these important conversations.
