The Disavowed is a digital platform accompanying the traveling exhibition produced by the Foundation Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and the Flossenbürg Concentration Camp Memorial. The website sheds light on the long-neglected histories of those persecuted by the Nazi regime as “asocials” and “career criminals” — groups whose suffering was only officially recognised in Germany in 2020.
Through historical context, personal stories, and exhibition materials, the platform explores why these people were targeted, how state and society contributed to their exclusion, and why their recognition as victims was delayed for decades. It also offers insights into the ongoing gaps in Germany and Austria’s commemorative culture.
This resource provides essential background for understanding the project The Disavowed and supports educators, researchers, and memory practitioners engaged with marginalized histories of National Socialism.
