30 Years Since the Srebrenica Genocide: A Call for Memory and Responsibility

As part of its collaboration agreement with the Srebrenica Memorial Center, the European Observatory on Memories supports the campaign for an accurate memory of the genocide.

The European Observatory on Memories (EUROM), part of the Solidarity Foundation of the University of Barcelona, and the Memorial Center Srebrenica have signed a long-term partnership agreement to strengthen transnational cooperation in the field of historical memory, education, and human rights.

The agreement, formalized in early 2025, lays the foundation for sustained collaboration on initiatives that promote the accurate remembrance of the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide and confront its ongoing denial across Europe and beyond.

As the first joint action under this agreement, EUROM is proud to support the Memorial Center’s campaign marking the 30th anniversary of the genocide, which includes the release of a new documentary video and the launch of the Guidelines for Accurate Reporting and Speaking About the Srebrenica Genocide, authored by journalist Melina Borčak.

“For almost 30 years, media across the globe have reduced the story of the Srebrenica Genocide to ‘8000 Muslim men and boys killed’, with every word in that phrase misleading,” the Memorial Center states. “There is so much more to write, say, and learn about the genocide. The time has come to do it — accurately and professionally.”

The campaign is complemented by a new audiovisual piece, which will be available on EUROM’s YouTube channel starting July 11. Distributed by the Memorial Center, the film serves both as a historical summary and a clear expression of the Center’s mission: to preserve the memory of the victims, support survivors, and combat denial through education and evidence-based advocacy. This campaign is a call to action for educators, journalists, public institutions, and civil society actors to engage in responsible, accurate communication about one of Europe’s most devastating episodes of mass violence since World War II.

As a transnational network engaged in memory work, EUROM reaffirms its commitment to supporting institutions like the Memorial Center Srebrenica that uphold the values of truth, justice, and democratic remembrance. Through this partnership, both organizations aim to strengthen cross-border efforts to preserve difficult histories and promote a culture of non-violence and accountability.
