The National Museum of Resistance and Freedom – The Fortress of Peniche is dedicated to researching, preserving, and sharing the memory of resistance against the Portuguese fascist regime with a multidisciplinary approach. It focuses on the testimonies of men and women who stood against fascism and fought for liberty and democracy.

The Fortress of Peniche became a powerful symbol of resistance and the fight for freedom following the release of its political prisoners on April 27, 1974. In recognition of its historical significance, it was determined that the integrity of this historic military and prison site should be preserved through the creation of a museum.

On May 6, 2017, the 21st Portuguese Constitutional Government held a Council of Ministers meeting at the Fortress of Peniche, during which it established a National Museum at the site. This museum aims to preserve the memory of 48 years of suppressed freedom in Portugal and foster critical reflection essential for shaping the future.
