Youth Exchange in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Memory, citizenship and participation
  • A group of 20 young Spanish and Bosnian will participate in the second traveling workshop in Bosnia and Herzegovina promoted by the EUROM in collaboration with the Youth Council of Barcelona (CJB) and the Youth Initiative for Human Rights (YIHR);
  • The seven-day program focuses on the recent past of Bosnia and Herzegovina, paying special attention to the historical relationship of Barcelona and Sarajevo;
  • Debates and talks aim to reflect on the rise of nationalism, fascism, and anti-Semitism in Europe nowadays, making visible the memory of the ethnic conflict of the Balkans (1991 – 2001).

September 9

First meeting at YIHR BiH office

September 10

10 am – 1 pm: Sarajevo and its history
Tour with Vedran Grebo

3 pm – 5 pm:  Sarajevo and the Olympics
Visit to Trebević with Vedran Grebo. Part of this tour will include conversations about the connection between Barcelona and Sarajevo.

5,30 pm: Group presentations by participants about history of the countries

 September 11, 2019

8 am: Departure to Srebrenica and Potočari

  • Visit to Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial Center
  • Meeting with Mothers of Srebrenica

2 pm:  Lunch in Srebrenica

Return no Sarajevo

5,30 pm: Reflection session on the importance of memorialization sites – what are we learning from them; how are those places utilized in education about history?

September 12

10 am: Visit to significant Sarajevan war spots with General Jovan Divjak followed by discussion about the work of the Foundation “Education Builds BiH”

1 pm: Visit to Historical Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina with Elma Hasimbegovic

4 pm: Visit to the Tunnel Museum5,30 pm: Reflection session: What roles and functions can museums have in dealing with the past? How are they different from and how are they similar to other forms of remembrance? What educational functions can museums have and under what circumstances?

September 13

8 am: Departure to Mostar

10,30 am: City tour, Mostar Shelters, The Death of Yugoslavia

12,30 pm: Visit OKC Abrašević

2,30 pm: Lunch in Blagaj

5 pm:  Return to Mostar5,30 pm: Reflection session on life in a divided city and country in general – young people against segregation and/or followers of imposed rules?

September 14

10 am: Departure to Stolac

11 am: Tour of Stolac

3 pm: Visit to concentration camp “Bone hospital

5 pm:Return to Sarajevo

5,30 pm: Reflection session on life in a divided city and the concentration camp in Stolac.

September 15                        

Final reflection session and evaluation: What have we observed? What could be applicable in our countries – what not? What could be a joint approach? Follow up exchange through social media? Possibility of another exchange trip? Detailed plan of timeframe, divided tasks and responsibilities.
