This film cycle commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Spanish Civil War throughout cinematographic stories. It takes cinema as an ideal place to face memory: its condition of tale turns it into a powerful mythological machine, and its visual primacy makes it ideal to crystallize lasting memorabilia images.
The opening session will be delivered by Bartomeu Vilà, who will discuss his own movie Cinema in times of war (2014). The cycle will continue with the screenings of Land and Freedom (Ken Loach, 1995), La Guerra de los locos (Manuel Matji, 1987), Posición Avanzada (Pedro Lazaga, 1966), and Behold a Pale Horse (Fred Zinnemann, 1964). The documentary film Franco on Trial (2018), by Lucía Palacios and Dietmar Post, will close the cycle on April 10. It will be presented by the director of the EUROM, Jordi Guixé, and the lawyer Josep Niubó Claveria.
The cycle is a university extension activity organized by the Research Center Filmhistòria and the Section of Contemporary History of the University of Barcelona in collaboration with the European Observatory on Memories. Directed by professor Magí Crusells and coordinated by Francesc Sánchez Barba.
