- Closely tied to the different traumatic memories of each national, historical or political reality, sites of memory encapsulate the memory of events such as war conflicts, dictatorial and totalitarian experiences, genocides and crimes against humanity, or other flagrant cases of human rights violations;
- How does each place present itself? How is the attraction of visitors managed? Which management model is the most appropriate one? How do we tackle potential trivialisation processes?
- Co-organized by the EUROM and the Gernika Peace Museum Foundation in collaboration with the Maison d’Izieu, the two-day online seminar will present and discuss this issues with representatives of memory sites from Argentina, Germany, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Japan and South Africa, and Spain.

Sites of memory constitute a heritage category that has been flourishing in recent decades. Museums, public space interventions and various heritage amenities are emerging in every geographical location around the world and provide the opportunity to reflect on how the past manifests itself in the present. Closely tied to the different traumatic memories of each national, historical or political reality, sites of memory encapsulate the memory of events such as war conflicts, dictatorial and totalitarian experiences, genocides and crimes against humanity, or other flagrant cases of human rights violations.
However, what makes sites of memory a living element, with the capacity to convey such memories, is the constant interaction with their visitors. For this reason, the existence of such a heritage category cannot be understood if it is not through the dialectic between place and visitor. Sites of memory are therefore spaces where the practice of tourism plays an important role. The practice of tourism, as it is undertaken in such unique places, generates a series of challenges that raise numerous questions: How does each place present itself? How is the attraction of visitors managed? Which management model is the most appropriate one? How do we tackle potential trivialisation processes?
