The fourth session of the permanent seminar 2024-2025 will explore the Responsibility to Protect (R2P), a pivotal political commitment adopted by the United Nations World Summit in 2005. Rooted in the work of the International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty of 2001, R2P aims to safeguard populations from four mass crimes: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and ethnic cleansing.
The session will be led by Elena Jiménez Botías, a distinguished scholar and advocate in the field of international law and human rights. She will critically examine the extent to which the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) bridges the gap between the mechanisms provided by public international law and the complex realities of contemporary conflicts. The discussion will analyze the effectiveness of R2P in addressing the challenges posed by modern warfare and humanitarian crises.
