The shelters built by citizens to save lives during the Barcelona air raid later became a European heritage site during the Second World War and the beginning of the Cold War, in an experience, that of shelters against savagery, which continues to the present day. The conference will gather historians, archaeologists, artists, architects and representatives of civil society who claim this heritage throughout the continent with the aim of sharing knowledge and experiences focused on the articulation of memories and actions. It is part of the exhibition 1.322. Air-raid shelters in Barcelona, curated by Ana Sánchez and Xavier Domènech.
All sessions will be recorded and published on the EUROM Youtube channel.
Background
The shelters built by citizens to save lives during the Barcelona air raid later became a European heritage site during the Second World War and the beginning of the Cold War, in an experience, that of shelters against savagery, which continues to the present day. Shared reality, a common heritage and various ways of facing it that will be the subject of this conference.
Which models and paths were used during their construction? What subsequent use was made of them? What stories does their memory reveal today? What influence did the case of Barcelona have in other countries? Historians, archaeologists, city planners, architects, and representatives of civil society who reclaim them across the continent will meet in Barcelona, the first city in the world to be systematically bombed from the air, to share knowledge and experiences that will enable us to move forward in the development of shared memories and actions.
