Educators and researchers on genocide studies are invited to gather for a special event on October 15, from 17:00 to 18:30, at the Historical Building of the University of Barcelona. The session will feature representatives from the Srebrenica Memorial Center in Bosnia-Herzegovina, offering an invaluable opportunity to learn about and reflect on the genocide committed during the Bosnian War.
The Srebrenica massacre, carried out in July 1995 by Bosnian Serb forces, resulted in the deaths of more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys, making it the largest mass killing in Europe since World War II. The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia declared this atrocity an act of genocide. The Srebrenica Memorial Center is dedicated to investigating, preserving, and commemorating the memory of this tragic event, managing the Memorial, Cemetery, and museum spaces related to it.
This session will include:
- Introduction to the Srebrenica Memorial Center and its pedagogical mission by Mirela Osmanović, Liaison for International Cooperation at Srebrenica Memorial Center, and Hasan Hasanović, Head of the Oral History Department.
- A networking space for attendees to exchange ideas, practices, and reflections on genocide education.
The event aims to foster potential collaborations between the Srebrenica Memorial Center and the educational community in Catalonia, focusing on how genocides are taught and understood in classroom settings.
This session is particularly relevant to educators and other educational professionals with an interest in teaching about genocide.
