Memory Wars: Facts, Disinformation and the Politics of Remembrance

ENRS Symposium 2026 | Turbo Presentations

At the 14th European Remembrance Symposium, EUROM will take part in the conversation on “Memory Wars: Facts, Disinformation and the Politics of Remembrance” with a turbo presentation focused on how younger generations engage with disinformation and contested narratives about the past. Drawing on experiences from the 2026 School on European Memories and the participatory event Twisting the Past, the presentation will showcase how students, activists and young researchers reflect on the manipulation of history in today’s political and media landscapes.

Through testimonies, debates and collaborative activities developed within these initiatives, EUROM will highlight the ways in which young people identify, question and challenge distorted historical narratives circulating online and in public discourse. The presentation will also explore how memory conflicts are increasingly intertwined with contemporary political polarisation, hybrid warfare and the spread of disinformation across Europe.

By bringing these perspectives to Bratislava, EUROM aims to underline the importance of critical historical thinking and civic engagement in confronting the weaponisation of memory. The contribution will offer a dynamic glimpse into how educational and cultural initiatives can help younger generations navigate the complex relationship between history, identity and information in an increasingly fragmented European public sphere.
