To commemorate International Women’s Day 2025, the EUROM is organizing a screening of the documentary Las Cartas Perdidas (The Lost Letters: Prison and Exile of Republican Women), directed by Amparo Climent. Following the screening, we will host a thought-provoking discussion featuring:
- Pilar Sancho, producer of the documentary and Goya Award 2025 winner for the short film Seeds of Kivu;
- Ana Maria Batalla, activist and daughter of former political prisoners of the Franco regime.
The conversation will be moderated by Matilde Eiroa, historian, researcher, and professor at the University Carlos III of Madrid, whose pioneering work has focused on the repression of women and the Republican exile.
The event will take place on March 6, 2025, at the former prison La Model in Barcelona, one of the documentary’s filming locations and the place where Ana Maria Batalla’s parents met through an exchange of letters while imprisoned.
Synopsis
After the coup, the Franco regime took advantage of its victory to cruelly and savagely punish the republican population. More than 250,000 Spaniards were imprisoned in concentration camps and prisons. The repression against women was even harsher, with rapes, vexatious humiliations and hair shaving. Many of these women wrote letters to their families or friends before they died or during their imprisonment. This documentary, filmed in Spain and France, recovers some of these letters and introduces their authors so that their names are not erased from history.
The movie features the participation of Marisa Paredes, Alba Flores, Julieta Serrano, Nora Navas, Ana Belén, Tina Sainz, Luisa Gavasa, Rosana Pastor, Gloria Vega, Karmele Aranburu, María Isasi, Natalia Huarte, Resu Morales, Ana Gracia, Teresa del Olmo, Chupi Llorente, Amparo Climent, Miriam Tejedor, África de la Cruz, and the girls Sara Rivas and Teresa Rodríguez.
