Book presentation: “10 Elections”

A conversation with Joan Guàrdia and Jaume Duch

The latest book published by the EUROM and the Jean Monnet House will be presented during a conversation between the Rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Guàrdia, and the spokesperson and Director-General of Communication for the European Parliament, Jaume Duch. The talk will take place on July 8, 2024, at 12 pm at the Ramón y Cajal Hall of the historical building of the University of Barcelona and will be moderated by the journalist Laura Rosel, Director of Communications of the UB.

The event takes place one week before the first plenary session of the new legislature, which will be held in Strasbourg from July 16 to 19. It aims to bring a retrospective look at the evolution and expansion of the European Union since the first European Parliament elections in 1979, opening a discussion on the main challenges facing the institution in the new five-year term.

Entrance is free, but prior registration is required.  The PDF version of the book can be downladed here. The interactive verison is available on this link.

About the book

Through both scholarly and hands-on approaches, the authors consider the ten European elections in their historical context, from the first steps towards a fully democratic Parliament to the gradual widening of its powers, with meaningful reflections on the future prospects of European democracy.

Ten Elections. A history of the European Parliament at the ballot box (1979-2024) is the third of a series of commemorative publications promoted by the Jean Monnet House of the European Parliament and the European Observatory on Memories of the University of Barcelona’s Solidarity Foundation in collaboration with the Istituto di Studi Federalisti Altiero Spinelli and with the support of the programme Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) of the European Commission.
