The European Observatory on Memories (EUROM) will participate in the 12th edition of Periodismo a Pie de Calle, the annual programme of public debates organised by the Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council, which will take place from 24 to 28 August 2026. Bringing together journalists, researchers, and international experts, the initiative creates a space for public discussion on some of today’s most pressing global challenges, including human rights, geopolitics, disinformation, and historical memory.
EUROM will take part in the roundtable “Memory Sites Around the World: Examples and Reflections”, to be held at the Europa Conference Centre on August 28 at 7 pm. The session will explore how sites of memory contribute to preserving democratic values, addressing past human rights violations, and fostering critical engagement with history in different international contexts.
Representing EUROM, Fernanda Zanuzzi, Head of Press and Communications at the European Observatory on Memories, will join Maider Maraña, Director of the Baketik Foundation and researcher at the UNESCO Chair on Cultural Landscapes and Heritage, whose work focuses on the legal protection of sites of memory. The discussion will be moderated by archaeologist and contemporary historian Josu Santamarina, author of Euzkadi en ruinas. Arqueología de la Guerra Civil en el País Vasco (1936–1948).
The conversation will examine different approaches to preserving and interpreting sites associated with conflict, dictatorship, exile, and political violence, reflecting on their role in democratic societies and on the challenges of memory policies in an international context.
EUROM’s participation reinforces its commitment to promoting public debate on democratic memory and to sharing European experiences and good practices on the preservation, interpretation, and social activation of memory sites.
