The European Observatory on Memories (EUROM), together with the Gernika Peace Museum, is partnering in the new edition of Sound in the Silence, an intercultural and international remembrance project for secondary school students, led by the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity (ENRS). The 2026 edition will take place in Gernika, Spain, from 3 to 11 October. Applications are open until 3 May 2026.
About the Project
Sound in the Silence combines visits to historical memory sites, on-site history learning, and artistic workshops, offering students a unique way to engage with the past.
This edition will focus on the bombing of Gernika on 26 April 1937 and the broader context of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). The attack, carried out by German and Italian forces in support of Franco’s Nationalists, was one of the most devastating assaults on civilians in 20th-century Europe. It also became a case study in propaganda, as false narratives claimed the town was destroyed by its own inhabitants.
The programme centers on civilian experiences of violence, loss, displacement, and fear. Through artistic expression, students will reflect on memory, resilience, and the lasting impact of conflict.
