On the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the European Observatory on Memories (EUROM) of the University of Barcelona’s Solidarity Foundation organised Auschwitz and the Construction of European Memory, a public event devoted to reflecting on the origins, meaning, and impact of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial on European culture and identity.
The event brought together Dr. Piotr Cywiński and Dr. Danuta Glondys, whose contributions combined institutional expertise, cultural policy, and personal experience. The session opened with a keynote lecture by Dr. Cywiński on the historical and political context of the memorial’s creation and the role of commemorative sites in shaping collective responsibility. This was followed by a dialogue with Dr. Glondys, who drew on her experience as former Director of Culture of the City of Kraków and former Director of Villa Decius—an institution committed to dialogue, plurality, and tolerance.
Organised by EUROM – University of Barcelona’s Solidarity Foundation, with the support of the Citizens, Equality, Rights & Values Programme of the European Commission and the Barcelona City Council.
