Observing Memories 9

EUROM Magazine 2025

The 9th edition of Observing Memories, the annual journal of the European Observatory on Memories (EUROM), examines how memory operates today as a living and contested practice in a context of global uncertainty.

With original contributions from an international and comparative perspective, the volume engages with key debates shaping the contemporary memorial landscape. It addresses subaltern and historically marginalised memories, democratic and antifascist struggles, and the re-examination of Europe’s colonial and slaveholding pasts.

Published on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the death of dictator Francisco Franco, this issue revisits Spain’s democratic memory and the ongoing challenge of transmitting past struggles for freedom to new generations. It also confronts pressing current issues, including war, the rise of authoritarianism, historical revisionism and the growing influence of digital environments on memory and democratic culture.

Across its sections, Observing Memories #9 brings together research, cultural practice and civic engagement, framing memory not as a static archive but as a tool for justice, inclusion and democratic renewal.

Remembering is not a passive act — it shapes our shared future.
