Since the end of the armed conflicts that devastated Europe in the 20th century, the promotion of democratic memory policies has become a moral duty that requires reinforcement in order to neutralize oblivion and avoid a repetition of the most tragic episodes of our recent history. Education and Culture, as the pillars on which memory rests, are decisive elements in the promotion of open, inclusive and plural forms of citizenship.
ICMEMOHRI, the International Committee of Memorial and Human Rights Museums, joins the International Conference “Cultural Policies on Memory for a Democratic Europe“, organized by the Ministry of the Presidency, Relations with the Courts and Democratic Memory in the framework of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union with the aim of making visible those initiatives which have laid the foundations in Europe for the management of cultural heritage from the perspective of remembrance, the defence of human rights and the firm commitment to “never again” as the unequivocal ethical imperative of a democratic European society.
In partnership with EUROM, ICMEMOHRI continues to explore the theme of its 2023 Annual Conference in Spain, The role of Memorial & Human Rights Museums in the Promotion of Truth, Justice and Reparation for an Equitable Future with sessions at the Centro Sefarad Israel in Madrid and discussions and visits to relevant memorials in Portbou, Girona and the Former Prison La Model in Barcelona.
