The School of Humanities is the biggest faculty in Tallinn University comprising of several former independent institutes (Estonian Institute of Humanities, Institute of Estonian Language and Literature, Institute of Slavonic Studies, Institute of Romance and German Studies, Institute of History) and the Language Centre. After the structural reform in the university, the departments and curricula of the former institutes were gathered into six study areas: Asian Studies, Estonian Language and Culture, History, Cultural theory, Russian and Eastern European Studies, and Western European Studies. School of Humanities is a competence centre for a wide range of knowledge and experience in Humanities. This is reflected by our curricula at Bachelor, Master and Doctoral level.
It has nearly 1700 students participating in 14 BA, 16 MA and 3 PhD curricula. In addition, the School teaches a wide range of languages not only to its own students but to the whole university.
The academic staff is not only involved in teaching, but also active in the TU Centre of Excellence in Intercultural Studies, Centre for Landscape and Culture and Centre of History, Archaeology and Art History (based in the Institute of History). The school is also involved in two research networks: Centre of Medieval Studies and the Centre of Environmental Studies.
