The University Institute of History Jaume Vicens Vives (IUHJVV) Pompeu Fabra University was established by decree of the Government of Catalonia of 2 September 1991 (DOG of 23 September), “dedicated to the research and organization of postgraduate studies in various aspects covering political, economic, social and cultural “and began its regular activity the academic year 1991-1992. By decision of 11 February 1992, the Academic Commission of the Universities Council approved the request of the UPF grant the title of Doctor in History and IUHJVV since then has organized the training program accordingly. Since the 2009-2010 academic year IUHJVV also manages the Master in World History.
The founder and first director was Josep Fontana Lázaro IUHJVV. Former directors of the Institute are also Jaume Torras (2004-2007) and Joaquim Albareda (2007-2013).
The Institute has as main objectives:
- promote historical research and the dissemination of their results
- train researchers from his postgraduate studies
- constitute a meeting point to foster scientific debate among historians
- contribute to the continuing education of teachers of history
- participate in outreach beyond the university community.
To accomplish these functions the IUHJVV finaçament has the rightful within the general budget of the UPF and human resources assigned to the university, both teaching and research staff and administration and services.
Researchers and students linked to IUHJVV include a workspace with computer equipment running on the second floor of the building Tank Water the area of the Citadel.
In addition to providing technical and material support to the researchers, the space above IUHJVV has an important library specialized in history.
The composition, powers and responsibilities of the governing bodies and management of the Institute are determined in a regulation approved by the University Pompeu Fabra.
