Presentaci\u00f3<\/h3>\n

Des de 1914 i fins a la finalitzaci\u00f3 de la Segona Guerra Mundial (1945), centenars de jueus s\u2019estableixen a Barcelona. Fins llavors, la pres\u00e8ncia jueva a la ciutat comtal \u00e9s testimonial. L’any 1877, per exemple, hi resideixen una vintena de jueus, mentre uns 400 ho fan a la resta de l’Estat. Aquesta xifra augmenta al llarg dels anys, recolzant-se en diversos fluxos migratoris, tant d’asquenazites com de sefardites, que recorren el continent europeu d’est a oest. A inicis del segle XX trobem el rastre de jueus sefardites procedents de diverses parts de l’Imperi Otom\u00e0 (Gr\u00e8cia, Turquia, Bulg\u00e0ria, etc.) que s\u2019estableixen als voltants del Mercat de Sant Antoni. Aquests jueus otomans conviuen amb altres hebreus de proced\u00e8ncia asquenazita que viuen a la ciutat des de 1900.<\/p>\n

Entre 1914 i 1945, tenen lloc diverses onades migrat\u00f2ries de jueus cap a Barcelona: la primera, concentrada entre 1914 i finals de la Primera Guerra Mundial, est\u00e0 conformada per jueus otomans residents a Fran\u00e7a i a It\u00e0lia; la segona, \u00e9s fruit dels canvis territorials que tenen lloc als Balcans despr\u00e9s de la Primera Guerra Mundial, provocant petits fluxos migratoris des de l’antic Imperi Otom\u00e0 (Tessal\u00f2nica, Istanbul, Esmirna, Plovdiv, Varna, etc.), multiplicats despr\u00e9s amb la promulgaci\u00f3 del Reial Decret de 20 de desembre de 1924, pel qual el govern de Primo de Rivera facilita la nacionalitzaci\u00f3 dels jueus sefardites que poden demostrar el seu “origen espanyol”; la tercera t\u00e9 lloc al llarg dels anys 20, jueus polonesos empesos per la mis\u00e8ria, b\u00falgars a la recerca de noves oportunitats, grecs que responen a l'”efecte trucada” i alguns marroquins que escapen de la creixent judeof\u00f2bia…<\/p>\n

… la quarta \u00e9s una gran onada, potser la m\u00e9s nombrosa, que t\u00e9 lloc entre l’adveniment del nazisme a Alemanya, el gener de 1933, i el comen\u00e7ament de la Guerra Civil espanyola; la cinquena esdev\u00e9 durant la Segona Guerra Mundial i fa refer\u00e8ncia als que abandonen l’Europa dominada pels nazis i posen rumb a Espanya a la recerca de refugi. Entre la quarta i la cinquena onada migrat\u00f2ria, el per\u00edode que ocupa la Guerra Civil espanyola, es produeix l\u2019arribada de jueus antifeixistes amb la intenci\u00f3 d’unir-se a la causa republicana.<\/p>\n

Jacques Bensussan<\/h3>\n

Jacques Bensussan neix l\u2019any 1877 a Tessal\u00f2nica, una ciutat que viu llavors un renaixement i un proc\u00e9s d’industrialitzaci\u00f3 i transformaci\u00f3. Com d\u2019altres joves jueus d’estrat privilegiat, es forma a les aules emancipadores de la Alliance Israelite Universelle<\/em> que constitueix el nucli irrigador de la cultura i la llengua francesa. El 1912, la vida dels Bensussan pateix un canvi dr\u00e0stic. Tessal\u00f2nica passa a ser ciutat grega, deixant de pert\u00e0nyer a l’Imperi Otom\u00e0, arrencant de soca-rel les obligacions i privilegis que durant segles hi van gaudir. Jacques decideix llavors traspassar el seu negoci i malvendre les seves propietats amb la intenci\u00f3 de comen\u00e7ar de zero a un altre lloc. S\u2019estableix amb \u00e8xit a Par\u00eds, per\u00f2 una nova guerra, la Primera Guerra Mundial, obliga als Bensussan a tornar a fer les maletes. En aquesta ocasi\u00f3 prenen rumb cap al sud, a la terra m\u00edtica dels seus avantpassats. Aix\u00ed, durant l’any 1916 arriben a Barcelona.<\/p>\n

JOS\u00c9 I EDMUNDO METZGER<\/h3>\n

Els germans Metzger s\u00f3n uns joves jueus su\u00efssos que arriben a Barcelona a principis del segle XX. Durant els primers anys treballen com a representants de marques comercials, amb tot no trigaran en convertir-se en influents fabricants. Patenten una infinitat d’invents fins que estableixen la seva pr\u00f2pia f\u00e0brica al barri de Sant Mart\u00ed, batejada com a Tallers Weil S.A. En poc temps es guanyen el respecte de la ind\u00fastria espanyola. Es converteixen en prove\u00efdors de l\u2019ex\u00e8rcit i la Casa Real i obren oficines a Madrid i Bilbao. Els Metzger freq\u00fcenten els cercles m\u00e9s selectes de Barcelona: els balls de l’Hotel Orient, els vermuts al Majestic-Hotel Anglaterra, sopars al Maison Dor\u00e9e, la pr\u00e0ctica del tenis a les pistes de la Real Associaci\u00f3 de Barcelona de la qual s\u00f3n socis i tamb\u00e9 participen en competicions d’h\u00edpica.<\/p>\n

Jos\u00e9 Palomo Sagu\u00e9s, nascut a Brusa \u2013 llavors territori de l\u2019Imperi Otom\u00e0 \u2013 s\u2019estableix a Barcelona a finals de 1923 quan, com molts dels seus paisans, abandona la seva ciutat natal per evitar el servei militar obligatori. A Barcelona es dedica a la venda ambulant pels pobles de l’interior de Catalunya. Durant l’estiu de 1936, en ple fervor revolucionari, el negoci dels Palomo \u00e9s col\u00b7lectivitzat pel Comit\u00e8 de Mil\u00edcies. Un any i mig despr\u00e9s de l\u2019acabament de la guerra, la nit del 20 de desembre de 1940, Jos\u00e9 Palomo \u00e9s detingut per dos agents de policia. \u00c9s internat a la pres\u00f3 Model i m\u00e9s tard se\u2019l trasllada al camp de concentraci\u00f3 de Miranda d’Ebre (Burgos). En els tres anys que dura el seu internament en cap moment compareix davant un tribunal, ni se li imputa cap delicte<\/p>\n

La fami\u00edlia Esquenazi<\/h3>\n

L’octubre de 1914 la fam\u00edlia Esquenazi, integrada per Jos\u00e9, Elisa i el seu fill Jaime, desembarca, procedent d\u2019Istanbul, a una Barcelona en plena expansi\u00f3. Jos\u00e9 Esquenazi compagina la seva professi\u00f3 de sastre amb la venda ambulant. La seva situaci\u00f3 econ\u00f2mica \u00e9s delicada. El gener de 1917, assetjat pels deutes, rep un pr\u00e9stec salvador de l\u2019American Joint Distribution Committee, una organitzaci\u00f3 ben\u00e8fica nord-americana d\u2019ajut als jueus europeus. Atemorits pel succe\u00eft i pels possibles efectes de la Revoluci\u00f3 Russa de 1917, les autoritats espanyoles inicien la persecuci\u00f3 de molts estrangers a qui s\u2019acusa de ser bolxevics. Davant el perill d’una expulsi\u00f3 del tot arbitr\u00e0ria, l\u2019any 1918, Jos\u00e9 pren una decisi\u00f3 at\u00edpica, decideix batejar al seu fill Vidal Jaime Esquenazi Alfandari pel ritu cat\u00f2lic.<\/p>\n

Agudad Ahim<\/h3>\n

L\u2019any 1926, al barri de Sant Antoni de Barcelona, veu la llum la \u201cUni\u00f3 Fraternal Agudad A\u1e25im\u201d. La gran majoria dels seus membres s\u00f3n sefardites originaris de l’Imperi Otom\u00e0 que s\u2019estableixen a la ciutat, procedents de Fran\u00e7a durant els anys de la Primera Guerra Mundial. S\u00f3n venedors ambulants i petits comerciants dels Encants del Mercat de Sant Antoni, i resideixen al voltant del triangle format per les interseccions del Raval, el Poble Sec i Sant Antoni. Una gran majoria viu a la barriada del Poble Sec.<\/p>\n

La caiguda de Barcelona, el gener del 1939, suposa la desaparici\u00f3 d\u2019Agudad Ahim. El seu local resta clausurat, els arxius s\u00f3n requisats i els seus membres investigats i perseguits. La major part dels integrants de la seva junta directiva marxa a l’exili.<\/p>\n

La Comunitat Israelita de Barcelona<\/h3>\n

El 6 de maig de 1919, gaireb\u00e9 dos mesos abans de la fi de la Primera Guerra Mundial, s\u00f3n aprovats els estatuts de la Comunitat Israelita de Barcelona (CIB). Disset pioners en s\u00f3n els fundadors. Lloguen com a sinagoga els baixos d’un xalet situat al n\u00famero 250 del carrer Proven\u00e7a.<\/p>\n

La Comunitat creix amb l\u2019arribada de jueus procedents del Llevant mediterrani, empesos per la crisi econ\u00f2mica i per la proliferaci\u00f3 dels nacionalismes. Al 1925 s’estima la poblaci\u00f3 jueva de la ciutat en un miler de persones, xifra que es duplica tres anys despr\u00e9s. L’adveniment del nazisme a Alemanya, l\u2019any 1933, despla\u00e7a a Barcelona, un nombr\u00f3s contingent de jueus asquenazites. La ciutat suporta amb solv\u00e8ncia els efectes de la crisi econ\u00f2mica del 1929 i ofereix un ventall d’oportunitats, facilitant aix\u00ed la consolidaci\u00f3 d’una nombrosa col\u00f2nia de refugiats jueus. Aix\u00f2 no obstant part d\u2019aquests nouvinguts es veuran privats d\u2019aquestes oportunitats, vivint molts d\u2019ells en la indig\u00e8ncia.<\/p>\n

La fi de la Guerra Civil l\u2019abril del 1939 erigeix un nou escenari en el qual els valors del r\u00e8gim franquista s’imposen a sang i foc. La sinagoga i el centre comunitari del carrer de Proven\u00e7a s\u00f3n saquejats i clausurats. El president de la CIB, Edmundo Grunebaum, \u00e9s detingut i internat per haver estat un alt nivell de la ma\u00e7oneria. Els arxius de la Comunitat s\u00f3n confiscats i enviats a l’Arxiu de Salamanca.<\/p>\n

Margaret Michaelis<\/h3>\n

Margaret Michaelis neix en Dzieditz (Pol\u00f2nia) el 6 d’abril de 1902. Amb nom\u00e9s setze anys ingressa en el reconegut Graphik Institut de Viena on estudia fotografia. L\u2019any 1928 s\u2019estableix a Berl\u00edn on tres anys despr\u00e9s obre el seu propi estudi, el Foto-gross Studio, el qual roman actiu fins a l’arribada al poder del Partit Nazi. En aquest context convuls, Margaret coneix a Rudolf Michaelis, un arque\u00f2leg anarquista. Rudolf \u00e9s v\u00edctima de les primeres purgues pol\u00edtiques del govern nazi, sent destitu\u00eft del seu c\u00e0rrec al Museu Estatal de Berl\u00edn per la seva milit\u00e0ncia i posteriorment empresonat. El mateix dia que Rudolf surt de la pres\u00f3, la parella abandona Alemanya amb destinaci\u00f3 a Barcelona. A la ciutat comtal s\u2019instal\u00b7len, amb els seus amics anarquistes Dora i Helmut R\u00fcdiger, a un pis del carrer Rossell\u00f3.<\/p>\n

David Oliver<\/h3>\n

David Oliver neix l\u2019any 1880 a la regi\u00f3 polonesa de Galitzia. De jove emigra a Alemanya a la recerca de noves oportunitats. S’instal\u00b7la a Berl\u00edn on treballa com a productor cinematogr\u00e0fic i, m\u00e9s tard, en el negoci dels b\u00e9ns immobles edificant teatres i sales de cinema per tota Alemanya. Oliver arriba a Barcelona durant la primavera de 1933 i al setembre d\u2019aquell mateix any, conjuntament amb altres dos socis, el tamb\u00e9 refugiat jueu Kurt-Louis Flatau i el catal\u00e0 Mari\u00e0 Rubi\u00f3 Tudur\u00ed, funden la productora cinematogr\u00e0fica Ib\u00e8rica Films. La productora d\u00f3na feina a nombrosos jueus refugiats a Barcelona. A Do\u00f1a Francisquista<\/em>, pel\u00b7l\u00edcula de 1934, intervenen el realitzador Hans Behrendt i el director de fotografia Henrich G\u00e4etrner, conegut a Espanya com Enrique Guerner, el compositor Max Winterfeld i el decorador Herbert Lippschitz.<\/p>\n

Charlotte Margolin<\/h3>\n

Charlotte Margolin neix a Berlin el 1896 en el si d’una fam\u00edlia jueva assimilada. Estudia a la prestigiosa facultat de medicina de la Universitat de Berlin, la Medizinischen Universit\u00e4tsklinik der Charit\u00e9. El 1923 publica un estudi sobre el sistema nervi\u00f3s que t\u00e9 una gran repercussi\u00f3. A la fi dels anys vint s’integra al KPD-O, una escissi\u00f3 del Partit Comunista Alemany. A la primavera de 1933 perd la feina a la facultat i es veu avocada a emprendre l\u2019exili. Es trasllada a Barcelona on comen\u00e7a a freq\u00fcentar el cercle de refugiats jueus d’esquerres. Entaula amistat amb Ewald i Ella K\u00f6nig, les tamb\u00e9 emigrades Augusta Marx i Eva Sittig-Laufer i el matrimoni format per Max i Golda Friedemann.<\/p>\n

Werner Wolff<\/h3>\n

Wolff neix a Berlin l’any 1904 al si d’una fam\u00edlia jueva plenament assimilada. Fill de metge, estudia medicina a la Universitat de Berl\u00edn, on t\u00e9 com a professors als m\u00e9s importants representants de la psicologia Gestalt, Max Wertheimer, William Stern i Wolfang K\u00f6hler.
A l’estiu de 1933, Werner Wolff, despr\u00e9s d’una breu estada a Tenerife on arriba fugint de l’Alemanya nazi, recala a Barcelona convidat per Emili Mira, director de l’Institut Psicot\u00e8cnic de la Generalitat, per a impartir unes confer\u00e8ncies. Wolff tamb\u00e9 aprofita la seva estada a la ciutat per a realitzar alguns experiments en relaci\u00f3 amb la caracterologia. Com Wolff, altres refugiats jueus arriben a Barcelona per a treballar en l’equip de Mira, entre ells Sandor Eiminder i Alfred Strauss.<\/p>\n

Manuel Mendelsohn<\/h3>\n

El polon\u00e8s Manuel Mendelsohn arriba a Barcelona a la fi dels anys vint. Un oncle seu regenta una botiga d’encaixos prop de la Pla\u00e7a Urquinaona. M\u00e9s tard, tamb\u00e9 s\u2019estableixen a Barcelona el seu germ\u00e0 Mauricio i altres familiars. Els dos germans s’associen i munten el seu propi negoci de teles, la Casa Mendelsohn, situada al n\u00famero 169 del carrer Tamarit, just davant del Mercat de Sant Antoni. Bona part dels immigrants jueus arribats a Barcelona en aquests anys es dediquen a la ind\u00fastria de la indument\u00e0ria. Nom\u00e9s al carrer Sant Pau hi ha una vintena de botigues regentades per jueus.<\/p>\n

Luis Stern Selig<\/h3>\n

Luis Stern Selig (Mannheim, Alemanya, 1899-Barcelona, 1980), porta a terme una important tasca assistencial envers als jueus que arriben a Catalunya. Col\u00b7labora amb xarxes d\u2019evasi\u00f3 encarregades de conduir a la pen\u00ednsula Ib\u00e8rica a jueus retinguts al sud de Fran\u00e7a. Als que passen a Catalunya de forma clandestina els acull al pis que t\u00e9 a Barcelona o a la seva casa de Valldoreix i tamb\u00e9 s\u2019ocupa de l\u2019atenci\u00f3 als internats en presons i camps de concentraci\u00f3 espanyols.<\/p>\n

ELS GERMANS SEQUERRA, ELS PROTECTORS DELS JUEUS A BARCELONA<\/h3>\n

A finals de 1941, davant de la nombrosa aflu\u00e8ncia de jueus, l\u2019organitzaci\u00f3 assistencial jueva American Joint Distribution Committee envia un representant a Barcelona. Es tracta de Samuel Sequerra (Faro, 1913-Rio de Janeiro, 1992) a qui temps despr\u00e9s acompanya el seu germ\u00e0 Joel. Els Sequerra s\u2019instal\u00b7len a l\u2019hotel Bristol. Controlen l\u2019entrada dels jueus procedents de Fran\u00e7a i Andorra, negocien amb els governadors civils per tal d\u2019evitar el seu empresonament, s\u2019ocupen de l\u2019atenci\u00f3 m\u00e8dica i econ\u00f2mica als reunits a Barcelona i gestionen la seva emigraci\u00f3. Els sectors franquistes m\u00e9s propers a l\u2019Alemanya nazi intenten boicotejar la seva tasca. El vehicle amb el qual es desplacen per Catalunya pateix un atemptat i, un grup de falangistes assalten les seves depend\u00e8ncies. Tot aix\u00f2 propicia que traslladin la seva oficina a un habitatge del Passeig de Gr\u00e0cia.<\/p>\n

El 3 de desembre de 1942, hi debuta l\u2019orquestra de Bernard Hilda. Hilda (1914-2005) \u00e9s en realitat Bernart Levitzky, un director d\u2019orquestra franc\u00e8s d\u2019origen jueu. Fuig de Fran\u00e7a el novembre de 1942 acompanyat de la seva muller, i d\u2019alguns membres de la seva orquestra. El grup actua al Ritz i en altres sales de la ciutat, acompanyat de musics locals. Entre falangistes, estraperlistes, empresaris, espies i contrabandistes, la m\u00fasica de Hilda constitueix un referent de la vida barcelonina d\u2019aquells anys foscos.<\/p>\n

Victor Papo<\/h3>\n

Els avantpassats de Victor Papo (Mil\u00e0, 1927) s\u00f3n jueus sefardites que s\u2019havien instal\u00b7lat a Turquia. M\u00e9s tard es traslladen a It\u00e0lia i a Par\u00eds on regenten un hotel. All\u00ed els sorpr\u00e8n l\u2019esclat de la Segona Guerra Mundial. Merc\u00e8s a la \u201ccarta de protecci\u00f3\u201d que els atorga el c\u00f2nsol espanyol, els seus pares, V\u00edctor i el seu germ\u00e0 Alfredo escapen de Fran\u00e7a i aconsegueixen arribar a Barcelona el setembre de 1941. La fam\u00edlia Papo s\u2019estableix definitivament a la Ciutat Comtal. Alfredo es converteix en un reputat cr\u00edtic i promotor de la musica jazz mentre V\u00edctor desenvolupa la seva carrera professional com a enginyer.<\/p>\n

Ossip Bernstein<\/h3>\n

Ossip Bernstein (1882-1962). Doctor en dret i home de negocis, escapa de la mort a una pres\u00f3 d\u2019Odessa, en plena Revoluci\u00f3 Russa, despr\u00e9s de guanyar una partida d\u2019escacs a vida o mort al carceller que el vigila. En aquella \u00e8poca \u00e9s considerat un dels deu millors jugadors d\u2019escacs del m\u00f3n. L\u2019esclat de la Segona Guerra Mundial sorpr\u00e8n Bernstein a Par\u00eds. Decideix fugir de Fran\u00e7a amb la seva esposa i s\u00f3n detinguts al Pirineu giron\u00ed i, posteriorment ingressats a la pres\u00f3 de Figueres. La seva condici\u00f3 de mestre internacional d\u2019escacs fa que el governador Civil de Barcelona, Antonio F. Correa Veglison, amant dels escacs el protegeixi. Bernstein continua a Barcelona pronunciant xerrades i participant en trobades d\u2019escaquistes fins que decideix retornar a Fran\u00e7a anys despr\u00e9s de l\u2019acabament de la Segona Guerra Mundial.<\/p>\n

Henri Birnbaum<\/h3>\n

Henri Birnbaum (Berlin, 1921 \u2013 Barcelona, 2004) viu a Par\u00eds amb la seva fam\u00edlia quan la ciutat \u00e9s ocupada per l\u2019ex\u00e8rcit nazi. Llavors decideix escapar per unir-se a l\u2019ex\u00e8rcit aliat al nord d\u2019\u00c0frica. Es trasllada al sud de Fran\u00e7a on, el setembre de 1942 \u00e9s detingut i internat al camp de concentraci\u00f3 d\u2019Agde del que aconsegueix fugir i passar a Espanya. \u00c9s capturat als voltants de Tavascan (Pallars Sobir\u00e0). Passa per les presons de Sort i Lleida i pel camp de concentraci\u00f3 de Miranda d’Ebre d\u2019on \u00e9s alliberat el juny de 1943. Aconsegueix arribar a Casablanca i enrolar-se a l\u2019ex\u00e8rcit aliat. Al ser desmobilitzat retorna a Fran\u00e7a per\u00f2, anys despr\u00e9s pren la decisi\u00f3 d\u2019instal\u00b7lar-se a la ciutat comtal on ja vivia la seva germana Nina. Munta \u201cJudo Barcelona\u201d, el primer club de judo Barcelona i \u00e9s considerat l\u2019introductor d\u2019aquest esport a l\u2019Estat Espanyol.<\/p>\n
